What is the Green Deal?

Green Deal is the Coalition Government’s flagship policy for improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings in Great Britain. It is a new market framework and is based on a key principle that the cost of some energy efficiency measures pay for themselves, in effect, through the resulting savings on fuel bills.

How does Green Deal finance work?

Green Deal finance will not be a personal loan on the householder or building owner but will in fact be a debt held on the property. Future owners of the property will take on the remaining elements of the Green Deal until payment is complete.

What is a Green Deal Assessment?

This is carried out in your home or business premises by a Green Deal Adviser or Assessor, and may be subject to a charge. They will: - use standardised software to identify what energy efficiency or microgeneration improvements you can make and what the financial savings would be - outline how the payments will work identify which improvements are likely to be cost effective produce a Green Deal advice report outlining your options - declare any links they have with Green Deal Providers.

What products can I have through the Green Deal?

There are a range of products available through the Green Deal, including: - Products that keep the heat in, such as external and internal wall insulation, draught proofing and double glazing. - Products that help you heat your home more efficiently, such as efficient boilers, heating controls and under-floor heating. - Products to help you generate your own energy, such as solar panels and air source heat pumps.

Why should I make my property more energy efficient?

A more energy efficient home uses less energy, therefore saving money on energy bills. You will also be helping to reduce carbon emissions and doing your bit for the environment.

Who lends the money?

The money to pay for the cost of the products comes from the Green Deal Finance Company, an independent organisation set up to support the Green Deal.

Can I switch my energy provider?

Customers can switch energy providers – the Green Deal just moves to the new supplier – who will then collect the repayments on behalf of the Green Deal Finance Company.
